Biography

The early years

Andrei Norkin was born on July 25, 1968 in Moscow.

In 1985 he graduated from high school. During his studies, he became a five-time winner of the Moscow circus and pop art contests. [four]

From 1985 to 1986 he worked as a locksmith in the mock-up workshop of the Research Institute of Long-Range Radio Communications (NIIDAR) [5] .

From 1986 to 1988, he served in the military artillery on the territory of the Transcaucasian Military District in the city of Kutaisi , has the military rank of “ sergeant ”.

Television work

In 1996, he began working on television at the NTV television company [19] . Here (until April 2001) he was the host of the morning and afternoon issues of the Today news program and the Hero of the Day talk show [20] [21] . Since February 29, 2016 - the host of the socio-political talk show "Meeting Place" on NTV: initially paired with Olga Belova [56] [57] , from April 2, 2018 - individually [58] . However, Norkin’s work has been repeatedly criticized by the liberal media for the presenter’s biased behavior [60] and the biased selection of participants [61] , whose composition is almost identical to other programs (similar claims were made to the previous Norkin List program) [62] .

On April 2, 2019, during a live broadcast of the next issue of “Meeting Place”, Andrei Norkin unexpectedly disappeared from the studio. This happened after the speech of the journalist Sergey Loiko , who positively spoke about the Euromaidan five years ago and announced the existence of “psychology of slaves” in modern Russia [66] . Public position

Criticism of the Rain Channel

At the end of January 2014, during a scandal surrounding a Dozhd TV channel’s poll about the blockade of Leningrad, Andrei Norkin made a statement that “ in their pursuit of civic values, tolerance , they lost a sense of proportion ”. According to the journalist, the theme of the Great Patriotic War is the only thing that unites all citizens of Russia and inadvertently dealing with it was a big mistake, he compared the survey to a crime and urged the journalists of the channel to submit a letter of resignation of their own free will. His speech then caused a resonance among journalists and in the blogosphere [78] .

Also, according to Norkin, “the journalists are used as a shield ” by the owners of the TV channel, whose business was supposedly built on agreements with the country's leadership, and the Dozhd business model was “ organized under very foggy circumstances ” [79] .

According to the journalist Oleg Kashin , “ Andrei Norkin was the only decent person who opposed the Rain from about the same positions from which indecent people spoke on this subject ” and his appeal to the channel’s journalists to quit themselves became “ part of this pogromic atmosphere ”. Criticism of the Talk Show Venue

February 22, 2018 Norkin entered into a fight with Ukrainian political scientist and blogger Dmitry Suvorov. On air, a German politician Andreas Maurer, who visited the Donbass, spoke about the deaths of hundreds of children as a result of hostilities in eastern Ukraine. Suvorov began to shout insults at Maurer, called him a bastard and demanded to show photographs of the dead and shelling, after which Norkin attacked Suvorov with fists. Subsequently, several more guests of the program joined the fight. As a result of the scuffle, the political blogger got a scratch on his right hand. The NTV television channel apologized to the audience who witnessed this scene, and the Ekho Moskvy radio station called the incident “Norkin’s beating of a Ukrainian expert live” [90] [91] [92] [93] .

The jokes told by Norkin at the end of most episodes of the program were also often criticized by viewers and journalists for their rude sexual , rash or anti-Semitic character [94] [95] [96] [97] .

Former Norkin’s colleague on NTV, TV-6 and RTVi, Russian television journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza Sr. noted that in recent years Norkin has changed not only political convictions, but also his style: a formerly restrained and intelligent presenter, in his opinion, has turned into “ of a boorish type ”who swears, fights and is rude to invited guests, working in the genre of outrageous and scandals [98] . A similar opinion is shared by Igor Yakovenko [99] .

Family
