Atlas of languages (language atlas ) - a systematic collection of maps showing the distribution of individual languages and their dialects , united by a common territory ("Atlas of Chinese languages"), a common genetic or areal affiliation ("Atlas of Caucasian languages") or another common characteristic ("Atlas of languages intercultural communication ”).
Language atlases, in contrast to dialectological atlases, usually do not show the distribution of individual linguistic phenomena, although they may reflect the mutual influence of languages, and in some cases important isoglosses that are significant for dialect division (“Atlas of Romance Languages”).
Language maps can also be included in other atlases - ethnic or historical (for example, a series of language maps is available in the Tübingen Atlas of the Middle East ( Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients ), 1977-1994).
The creation of language atlases of this type is a relatively new phenomenon in linguistics , located at the intersection of areal linguistics , linguistic geography , sociolinguistics , linguistic anthropology , and often history and ethnography . At the same time, atlases of languages are an important aid in their further research.
