Hydrography

The river is formed by the confluence of the rivers Suluk (Sudu, Kholuk) and Ayakit on the slopes of the Bureinsky Range .

The length is 723 km, the basin area is 55.5 thousand km² [3] . The average slope is 1.82 ‰ [4] . There are about 4.5 thousand lakes in the river basin with a total area of 647 km² [5] .

It flows through marshy taiga , in permafrost. The upper Amgun is a typical mountain river. In the lower reaches it communicates with the Dalzha lake along the channel from Lake Dalgan .

Water Mode

Average long-term water flow in the lower Amguni reaches 488 m³ / s (flow volume 15.402 km³ / year). The average annual consumption is 500 m³ / s (193 km from the mouth) [6] . Maximum water consumption reaches 2000 m³ / s [4] .

The river feed is mainly rainwater. Spring flood lasts 1-1.5 months. The water temperature in the upper reaches in summer is not more than 18 ° С, on average 20-21 ° С, in the lower reaches 26 ° С. Rain floods are frequent - in the mountainous part of the basin, their number reaches 12, in the lower reaches - from 4 to 10 per season, the water level rises thus reaching 2-4 and 4-8 m and more, respectively. From May to October, up to 97% of the annual flow passes in the upper course of the river; in the lower reaches - 92-94%. The strongest floods are observed in August [4] .

The mean annual suspended sediment discharge (Guta village) is 882 thousand tons / year. Water salinity is 150–350 mg / l in the period of increased runoff to 700–800 mg / l in the winter low water [4] .

Ledothermic

The first ice on the river appears at the end of October; by mid-November, the river finally freezes, and in the mountains a little earlier than on a plain. Also ice forms in the mountains. The ice cover is usually humorous . The average thickness of ice is about 1 m, in cold winters it can reach up to 170 cm. Ice cover is 180–190 days. Amgun opens in early May. The ice drift goes quite calmly to the village of Aktsing, below it is of a stormy nature and is accompanied by ice jams [4] .

Ichthyofauna

Salmon birds enter the river for spawning: pink, summer and autumn chum salmon. Up to 40% of autumn chum salmon is reproduced here, up to 60% - of pink salmon and summer chum salmon of the entire Amur basin. Also inhabit here: taimen , lenok , grayling, pike, catfish, burbot, whitefish, chebak [4] .

Economic value

Navigable for 330 km from the mouth. Along Amguni to the village of Birch stretches the route of the Baikal-Amur Mainline [5] .

Gold mining is carried out in the Amguni basin, timber is harvested and processed. Fishery is developed [4] .
