History
In the pre-revolutionary season, the championships of St. Petersburg were not officially held. The strongest chess players of the city were revealed in small tournaments or matches. The first official championship held by the Petrograd Chess Meeting took place in 1920 in a building on 12. Nakhimson Avenue . The winner was the mathematics teacher Ilya Rabinovich . The composition of the participants was initially based on personal invitations, later on the basis of qualifying competitions. Since 1943, championships have been held annually (except 1951). Five times the champions were Mark Taimanov (1948, 1950, 1952, 1961, 1973) and Andrei Lukin (1972, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1988), four times Mark Zeitlin (1970, 1975, 1976, 1978).
