The name Won in Russian comes from the phrase 원화 (pronounced Wonhwa), literally: the currency Won .

In circulation are banknotes of 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 won and coins of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 won.

Since coins of 1 and 5 won are rare, settlements are allowed to be rounded up to 10 won.

History

Vaughn was again put into circulation on June 9, 1962. The exchange of new money was carried out in the ratio: 1 won = 10 hvans . March 22, 1975, after the last coins were withdrawn from circulation, with a face value in khvans, won became the only legal tender. She was assigned the code ISO 4217 - KRW. At the time of the introduction of the won in 1962, its exchange rate was artificially attached to the exchange rate of the US dollar in the ratio of 125 won = 1 dollar . The change in the fixed rate in the period from 1962 to 1980 is shown in the table.

In circulation there was also a coin “chon” ( cor. 전 ? , 錢? ) With a denomination of 1/100 won, however, due to the reduction in price of the won, it is not used.

Since February 27, 1980, steps have been taken to move to a floating exchange rate . The final transition to the free exchange occurred on December 24, 1997, when an agreement was reached with the International Monetary Fund . [1] Soon after, as a result of the Asian financial crisis , she almost depreciated almost twice.

Coins

Until 1966, the only coins in circulation were 10 and 50 hwan, which were used as 1 and 5 won, respectively. New coins, denominated in won, were issued by the Bank of Korea on August 16, 1966. It was 1, 5 and 10 won. For the first time, these coins did not use the Korean calendar , but dates, counted from the beginning of our era . Coins 10 and 50 khvan were withdrawn from circulation on March 22, 1975.

In 1968, a 1-won coin of brass was replaced with an aluminum counterpart, as its real value began to exceed the nominal value. In order to further reduce the cost of producing coins, in 1970 new coins were issued 5 and 10 won from brass instead of bronze. A copper-nickel coin of 100 won was put into circulation in the same year, and 50 won in 1972.

On June 12, 1982, due to inflation and the increased popularity of vending machines , a coin of 500 won was put into circulation. In January 1983, in order to standardize the monetary system, a new series of coins was issued: 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 won. The coins were made in the same style as 500 won, but with the same old coins.
