Biography
Youth and Education
Sean Lennon was born in New York on October 9, 1975 , on the day of the thirty-fifth anniversary of his father, John Lennon . After the birth of his son, John became an exemplary family man, who did not have a soul for his son, until he was shot dead in 1980 .
Sean was educated in Switzerland at the Institut Le Rosey private boarding school, where Prince Edward , King of Belgium Albert II , Dodi Al-Fayed and members of The Strokes , Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond Jr. also studied at different times. Prior to that, he attended the private New York School of Ethical Culture and the Dalton School. After graduating from the Institute, Lee Rosi attended Columbia University for only three semesters, which he left for a musical career.
His first public musical experience was on the 1981 recording of Yoko Ono's Season of Glass. On the record, he recounted from memory the story that his father told him from time to time.
At the age of 9, Sean performed the song “It's Alright” on the 1984 Yoko Ono tribute Every Man Has A Woman .
In 1988, Sean starred in Michael Jackson 's Moonwalker . He later recalled working with Jackson as an undoubtedly positive experience. His first serious musical auditions were working in collaboration with Lenny Kravitz , on the album of the last Mama Said , 1991, and participating in a band to perform at the IMA , to support his mother’s album Risin , 1995.
Cibo Matto and Into The Sun
In 1997, Lennon (along with a friend, Timo Ellis) joined the Cibo Matto duo (Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda), who settled in New York, to record their second record, Super Relax . During his association with Cibo Matto, he was brought close to Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys , who expressed interest in his music. Lennon's debut album, Into The Sun, was released in 1998 via Beastie Boys' Grand Royal Records. Regarding the Grand Royal, Sean said, “I think I found the only label on the planet who was not worried about who my parents are and what my name is. It’s wonderful to know that I won’t get any offers if they don’t like my songs. This is not so often seen in the music business! ” Into The Sun was produced by fellow Cibo Matto, who later became his girlfriend, Yuka Honda, who, Sean said, inspired him throughout his work on the album. The music video for the single from the album was directed by Spike Jonze. Cibo Matto acted as Sean's band at Into The Sun and joined him in the final scene of the video for the song "Home".
In 1999, Sean's Half Horse mini-album , Half Musician , was released, featuring several new tracks, such as Heart & Lung and Happiness, as well as remixes of songs from Into The Sun. In the same year, Cibo Matto released their second album, Stereo Type A. To the dismay of many Cibo Matto fans, Stereo Type A was the band's last album, after which it split up. The Millennium found Sean hesitantly marching into the worlds of hip-hop and metal . He contributed vocals to Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Jurassic 5, Handsome Boy Modeling School (in which he performed the song “Sunshine” in a duet with Jush Hayden), and Max Cavalera's Soulfly .
In 2001, Sean performed “This Boy” and “Across The Universe” live with Rufus Wainwright (former roommate) and Moby for Come Together: A Night for John Lennon's Words and Music. Over the next few years, Sean is moving away from everyone's attention (and stands apart from media attention, meeting with Elizabeth Jagger and Buo Phillips). Be that as it may, he continues to collaborate with various groups and musicians as a musician or as a producer.
Our days
Following the termination of Grand Royal Records in 2001, Sean signed a contract with Capitol Records , whose parent company, EMI , has been releasing his father's music products for many years. A huge amount of both The Beatles and his solo recordings have been released. Sean still hadn't released fresh material, but Dead Meat, the first single of his new album, Friendly Fire, was released in early February 2006. The Friendly Fire CD / DVD ad trailer was posted online in early 2006 . The trailer included scenes from the film version of the album - music videos were compiled into a film. In fact, the clips were samples for the role in the film adaptation of Coin Locker Babies, another project that Lennon worked on, and so as not to lose material, Sean decided to make a movie copy of his album. Friendly Fire was launched in October 2006. On the day the album was released, Lennon first appeared on television for the first time since 2001, playing "Dead Meat" on the David Letterman Night Show. Lennon also performed at The Sharon Osbourne Show (UK) and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. In addition to his solo project, in 2006, Lennon also worked with Jordan Galland and his band Dopo Yume to record their album The Secret Show . Sean also assisted The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr in recording his debut solo album, Yours to Keep . In October 2006, a world tour started in support of the album Friendly Fire , and while Sean was in France , he remixed the song “Parachute” in collaboration with the French musician -M- . The remix was entitled "L'éclipse". In October 2007, Lennon performed at the BBC Electric Proms with Mark Ronson as a guest singer to perform Sail on, Sailor and We Can Work It Out with Daniel Merriweather and Tawiah . Currently, along with her girlfriend, she is a member of the Ghost of a Sabert Tooth Tiger.
In 2015, together with Primus bassist Les Kleipul, he created The Claypool Lennon Delirium . In 2016, the debut album of the duet Monolith of Phobos was released.
In 2017, he recorded a joint composition with American singer Lana Del Rey on her new album.
Musical influences
Sean Lennon said that Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys had the greatest influence on his music. He even interviewed Brian Wilson for a limited edition disc called Words and Music. During Into The Sun, Sean often talked about the admiration for the Brazilian band Os Mutantes . Later, while in Brazil , Sean performed live with Arnaldo Baptista (bass player and vocalist Os Mutantes) and later did the design for the 2000 Os Mutantes Tecnicolor album. Sean Lennon argues that Beastie Boys' Check Your Head album , featuring many musical compositions of various styles, was often a source of inspiration.
