The exact origin of Roger I is unknown. It is believed that he came from the Hugonid family and was the nephew of Count Maine Roger (d. C. 900) and brother of Hugo (d. 900/906), Count Bassini.
It is not known exactly when Roger I received the county of Laon . This probably happened in 892 after the execution of Count Laon Gaultier , whose widow he may have married.
In 922, the Marquis of Neustria, Robert I, rebelled against the king of the West Frankish state, Charles III the Rustic . In the spring of the same year, he besieged and captured Laon.
In 923, Count Herbert II de Vermandois captured Remois . Concerned about this, the local nobility, including Roger, called for the help of King Raul .
