History
The exact origin is unknown. The first known representative - Roger (d. 900), there is an assumption that he was a descendant of the counts of Le Mans , who lived in the VIII century . Christian Settipani identifies him with the Count of Roger, who in 892 helped his uncle, Count of Bourges Hugo . Then he was the son of the sister of Count Hugo. Perhaps he was the brother of Hugo, Count of Bassini , and Uncle Roger I, Count of Laon .
He married Rotilda (daughter of Charles II the Bald , King of the Western Francs ), thanks to which he became related to the Carolingians . In 895, the Marquis of Neustria and Count of Maine Ragenold from the house of the Rorgonids died in the battle with the Normans . Since the representatives of the house of the Rorgonids at that time were underage, Emperor Charles III Tolstoy appointed his close Henry the Marquis of Neustria, and Maine gave Roger. In 893, the new king Ed removed Roger, passing the county to his close Gozlen II from the house of the Rorgonids. But Gozlen could not keep the county, already in 895 Roger again became the Count of Maine.
The son of Roger, Hugo I (d. 939/955), also had to fight against Gozlin II, who claimed the county, but later Hugo reconciled with him, marrying his daughter. Thanks to the marriage in 914 of his sister with Hugo the Great , the son of the Marquis of Neustria Robert I , Hugo became close to the Robertins . He supported Robert in his rebellion against King Charles III the Rustic . Later, he was a faithful vassal of Hugo the Great, who became in 936 the Duke of the West Frankish Kingdom .
The eldest son of Hugo I, Hugo II (d. To 992), was one of the main vassals of Hugo the Great. But after the death of Hugo the Great, who left underage sons, in 956 , Hugo II took advantage of this to become independent, following the example of Fulk II , Count of Anjou , and Thibault Fraud , Count of Blois . Later, Hugo II and his son Hugo III (c. 960 - 1014), in alliance with the Counts of Blois, fought against the Capetians, as well as the Counts of Anjou, but in the end, in 996, Hugo III was forced to recognize the suzerainty of Count Anjou. His descendants tried to gain independence, but unsuccessfully.
The family died away in 1062 with the death of Herbert II , who bequeathed the county to the Duke of Normandy William .
