Description
Boats of the Collins type are the largest non-nuclear submarines in service [1] .
Construction and modernization
In total, from 1990 to 2003, six submarines of this type were built at the state shipyard in Adelaide , partly from sections of the hull made in Sweden. They entered service with the Australian Navy from 1996 to 2003, all detected problems were fixed as soon as possible.
Since 2009, at the production facilities of the Australian shipbuilding company ASC, the Collins-type submarines of the Australian Navy began to go through a repair and modernization program, the main purpose of which is to replace the combat control system and establish reliable operation of the Harpoon anti-ship missile launcher system. In 2016-2017, new sonars were installed on them. The main power plant has also been upgraded. In particular, the diesel engine start - up system has been redone, and they have been substantially modified, which eliminated their strong vibration. Improved electric engine . Generators replaced. This allowed us to eliminate the problems that the crews faced almost from the moment they entered the fleet [2] [3] [4] .
The first modernization was the submarines Collins and Rankin.

Service
In 2008, several submarines remained on combat duty. The reason for this was that the command of the Australian Navy was unable to form full-fledged crews of ships ─ sailors trained in the management of Collins, even in the years of their adoption, began to resign, and the training of new personnel was not carried out.
For 2013, Collins-type submarines are the only type of submarine in service with the Australian Navy. According to the current plans of the Ministry of Defense of Australia, a submarine of the Collins type, they will remain in service until at least 2025. And they will be used not only for naval patrols, but also for training crews for promising new generation submarines [5] , and in accordance with the plan to re-equip the armed forces to replace the Collins, 12 new type submarines will be built in Australian shipyards [6] .
