He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the Sorbonne ( 1953 ). He was a cultural adviser to the French Embassy in Turkey ( 1961 - 1964 ), director of the French Institute in London ( 1964 - 1967 ). Scientific Interests
Maren himself designated the area of his work as the history of semiotic systems, but the main subject of his interest was the problems of representing the everyday in public life, writing, politics, art - signs of power, passion, torment, ecstasy and rhetorical statements that operate on them. The material on which Maren worked was the Gospels , Por-Royal grammar, paintings by Caravaggio , Poussin , Philippe de Champaign , texts by Ignatius Loyola , Montaigne , Pascal , Rousseau , Stendhal , Borges , Roland Barth and others.
Authority and influence
During his life, authoritative for a narrow circle of friends and associates - Derrida , Lyotard , M. de Serto , J. Damis - over time, Maren, whose works have been translated into the main European languages today, had a significant impact on the theory and practice of interpretation in the humanities and social sciences: in the history of art - on D. Arras , who defended his dissertation under his leadership, in the sociology of literature - on Helen Merlin-Kazhman . In Russia, his ideas are actively developed by M. Yampolsky .
