In 1255, Aguilar received the privileged status of a royal city. Then the monastery of Santa Maria la Real was built here, still considered the main attraction. Aguilar castle belonged to the lords, later the Marquises of Aguilar from the clan Manrique de Lara . Currently, the castle is ruined.
