Kurmangazy (until 1991 - Kulalinskaya) is an oil and gas condensate field in Kazakhstan , located on the Kazakhstan sector of the North Caspian shelf . The nearest settlement is 80 km away, it is the port of Bautino in the Mangistau region . The area of Kurmangazy is 1632 km².
Kurmangazy is located in the shelf region of Kazakhstan , with a water depth of 5 to 7 m. The bottom relief has small slopes, with an increase in the depth of water to the south.
Jurassic - Cretaceous sediments stand out as the most likely oil prospective complex of the Kurmangazy oil and gas bearing structure, however, according to the data of seismic surveys in the study area, the possibility of detecting hydrocarbon deposits in the Triassic deposits is not ruled out. The expected reservoir pressure is in the range of 150-230 atm.
The main perspective horizons - Jurassic and Cretaceous , occur at depths from 300 to 1200 meters. Of certain interest are also deposits of the Triassic , occurring at depths of 1200-2000 meters. The depths of the sea within the Kurmangazy structure are on average about 5 meters.
The geological prospects of Kurmangazy are estimated by analogy with the deposits of the Buzachi Peninsula. The closest in geological type to Kurmangazy is the Kalamkas onshore field. Unlike the neighboring Kashagan field , Kurmangazy is suprasalt. This will greatly facilitate the development of the block, since it does not require penetration through the salt layer.
The construction of the first exploratory well in the contract area was completed on June 11, 2006 .
The obtained research results made it possible to find out that the actual structure parameters differ from the design model.
The data obtained during drilling will become the basis for further research aimed at clarifying the geological model of the Kurmangazy oil and gas bearing structure.
After analyzing all the obtained geological and geophysical data, exploration will continue in pursuance of the mandatory program of work provided for by the Subsurface Use Contract, including the drilling of a second exploratory well.
Drilling 2 wells were unsuccessful. According to unofficial data, logging showed the absence in the samples of even traces of residual oil reserves . [one]
The implementation of oil operations under the project was entrusted to Kurmangazy Petroleum LLP and registered in Aktau ( Mangistau Oblast ). Shares of project participants:
- Rosneft represented by RN-Kazakhstan LLC - 50%;
- KazMunayGas represented by JSC MNC KazMunayTeniz - 50%.
The development of this structure will be carried out on an equal footing by the Russian and Kazakh state oil and gas companies Rosneft and KazMunayGas . The parties plan to invest $ 23 billion in the project. The total profit from its implementation is expected to reach $ 50 billion.
The PSA project provides for three options for the maximum level of production. According to the most optimistic option, oil production at Kurmangazy may reach 64.5 million tons of oil per year. At this level, production can last up to seven years. According to the middle option, the field can produce 31.6 million tons of oil per year for ten years. The third option provides for annual production of 18.6 million tons with a plateau duration of up to twelve years.
The prospective geological resources of the structure are estimated by experts at 6.2 billion tons. According to preliminary estimates, 3.9 billion tons are in the Jurassic deposits, 2.3 billion tons - in the Cretaceous . Recoverable oil resources according to the structure of Kurmangazy by Russian experts are estimated in volumes from 550 million to 1800 million tons. If the upcoming exploration work confirms the forecasts of geologists, the second largest field with recoverable reserves of 1 billion tons of oil will appear on the Kazakhstan shelf off Kashagan .
