Newton first participated in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris . He took fourth place in the 2500 m hurdle race and fifth in the marathon .

At the 1904 Games in St. Louis, Newton participated in three disciplines. He took first place in the 4-mile team race, and as a result, his team became the best, winning gold medals. In addition, he took third places in the marathon and in the race at 2590 m with obstacles, receiving two more bronze medals.
