History
Landau was founded in 1224 by the Bavarian Duke Ludwig I of Kelheim . Earlier on this site was the village of Land Au , the first written mention of which dates back to 1074.
The city was burned during the Landshut inheritance war in 1504. At the very end of the Thirty Years War , in 1648, Landau managed to avoid re-destruction by paying tribute to the advancing army of the Swedes . During the war of Austrian succession in 1743, the city was almost completely destroyed by French and subsequently Austrian troops. In 1829, Landau had 1,624 inhabitants and 300 houses. In 1875, the first railway line was laid.
During the hostilities in April 1945, the city center was partially destroyed.
