Career

Club

In 1946, at the age of 2, Josef Dieter Meyer moved to the Haar suburb of Munich, where he later began playing football in the local children's team, as the center forward. Once, when the main goalkeeper of the team was injured, he had to get in the goal, although he always considered it shameful. Sepp performed the goalkeeper duties so well that at first he became the main goalkeeper in his team, and then he got into the team of Upper Bavaria . There he was noticed by the coaches of Bavaria , and was invited to his youth team.

He joined Bavaria in 1958, signed his first professional contract in 1962, and the team's first goalkeeper was a total of 16 years - from 1963 to 1979. Together with Bayern, he entered the Bundesliga in 1965 and became the four- time German champion , the four-time winner of the German Cup , the three-time winner of the European Champions Cup , the owner of the UEFA Cup and the Intercontinental Cup . Sepp Mayer possessed an incredible jumping ability to “steal” the opponent’s attackers and, catching the ball, elegantly press him to himself. Meyer still holds the Bundesliga record for consecutive matches - 442. July 14, 1979 , returning after a friendly match with Ulm to Munich , he had an accident, due to which, a year later, he was forced to end his player’s career.

National Team

Mayer's debut in the German national team took place in Dublin in 1966 in a match against the national team of Ireland . At the World Cup in 1966, Mayer was already in the national team, but remained the second after Hans Tilkowski . But at the 1970 championships, Sepp was already the main goalkeeper. In 1970, the German national team was third, in 1972 became the European champion, in 1974 - the world champion, and in 1976 took second place in the European Championship. In total, Sepp Mayer spent 95 games for the national team, for a long time being the champion in the number of games played for her, until he was overtaken by Lothar Matteus .

Coaching career

From 1994 to 2008, Sepp Mayer was the goalkeeper coach at Bayern. From 1988 to 2004, he was also the goalkeeper coach of the German national team. On October 10, 2004, he was fired from the national team by then-coach Jürgen Klinsmann for publicly speaking out for Oliver Kahn and against Jens Lehmann as the main goalkeeper of the national team.
