South of the Gironde is the Silver Coast .

The Gironde was used in the operation "Francon" (December 1942), directed against German ships - violators of the blockade, transporting valuable strategic raw materials from neutral states and Japan to occupied France. The kayak attack was attended by 10 commandos, obeying the British Marines under the leadership of Major Hasler . Of the 10 commandos, 2 survived - Hasler himself and his partner. Two drowned in the fast currents of the mouth of the Gironde, the remaining 6 were killed by the Germans.
