Hollow Earth in mythology and religion

In ancient times, the idea of ​​the underworld seemed quite reasonable, which is reflected in the concepts of places such as Hades among the Greeks , Svartalvheim among the Scandinavian peoples, Christian hell .

Early Theories

Rene Descartes in the treatise of the "Initial Philosophy" ( 1644 ) described the formation of the Earth from a star, similar to the Sun, but smaller in size ^[1] :

Suppose that the Earth where we live was once a luminary composed of only the matter of the first element, which occupied the center of one of the fourteen eddies enclosed in space, which we call the first sky. Therefore, it was no different from the Sun, except by the fact that it was smaller than it. Edmond Halley in 1692 defended the idea that the Earth consists of an envelope of approximately 500 miles (800 km), two internal concentric shells and a central core with diameters corresponding to Venus, Mars and Mercury. The shells are separated by atmospheres , and each shell has its own magnetic poles . Spheres rotate at different speeds. Halley proposed this scheme as an explanation for the anomalous behavior of the compass. He represented the inner atmosphere of the luminous (and, possibly, habitable) and assumed that the leakage of the inner luminescent atmosphere was the cause of the northern lights .

XVII - XVIII centuries ^[2]

Edmund Halley in 1692 put forward the idea of ​​the Earth, consisting of a hollow shell with a thickness of about 800 km, two inner concentric shells and an inner core. Atmospheres separate these envelopes, and each envelope has its own magnetic poles. Spheres rotate at different speeds. Halley proposed this scheme to explain the anomalous compass readings. He suggested that the atmosphere inside was luminous (and possibly inhabited), and suggested that the emission of gas caused the Northern Lights.

De Camp and Leigh claim (in Lands Beyond ) that Leonard Euler also proposed the idea of ​​a hollow Earth, getting rid of a multitude of shells and postulating an inner sun 1000 km (620 miles) across, giving light to the advanced civilizations of the inner Earth, but the authors do not give any links. In reality, Euler did not assume the Earth was hollow, but there was a slightly related thought experiment .

De Camp and Leigh also claim that Sir John Leslie expanded the idea of ​​Euler by proposing two central suns named Pluto and Proserpine (this was not related to the planet Pluto , which was discovered and named a century later). Leslie actually proposed the hollow Earth in the Elements of Natural Philosophy of 1829 (pp. 449–53), but does not mention the inner suns. Jules Verne refers to the theory of Pluto-Proserpina, which he attributes to the “English captain” in his Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Le Clerk Milfort in 1781, along with hundreds of Indians, the Cries went into a series of caves near the Red River over the confluence of the Mississippi River . According to Milfort, the original ancestors of the Creek Indians are believed to have come to the surface of the Earth in ancient times from caves. Milfort also claimed that the caves they saw "can easily accommodate 15,000 to 20,000 families."

XIX century

In 1818, John Cleaves Simms Jr. suggested that the Earth consists of a hollow shell 800 miles thick (1,300 km), with apertures of 1,400 miles (2,300 km) in diameter at both poles with four inner shells, each of which opens at the pole. Later, in 1826 , Simms expounded his ideas in a book and became one of the most famous early adherents of the hollow earth theory. He even tried to send an expedition to the North Pole , thanks to the efforts of one of his followers, James McBride, but the new president of the United States ( 1829-1837 ), Andrew Jackson , stopped this attempt. Simms died in 1829 ; his son continued his father’s activities and put forward the idea that ten lost tribes of Israel reside inside the earth.

Another follower, Jeremy Reynolds, also lectured on hollow earth and also defended the idea of ​​the expedition, but stopped talking about it after the death of Simms. Reynolds went on an expedition to the Antarctic himself, but could not join the Great Research Expedition of the USA 1838 - 1842 , despite the fact that the trip itself was the result of his agitation. He himself did not participate because he offended too many in his calls for travel.

Simms himself did not write books about his ideas, but others did. McBride wrote The Simms Concentric Sphere Theory in 1826 . It seems that Reynolds had an article published in 1827 in a separate booklet entitled “Notes on Simms theory, published in the Quarterly Review.” In 1868 , Professor William F. Lyons published The Empty Ball, which developed a theory similar to that of Simms, but only without mentioning Simms himself. Later, Simms' son, Amerikus, published the "Theory of Simms Concentric Spheres" to restore justice.

XX century

At the beginning of the twentieth century, William Reid, a follower of the idea of ​​the hollow Earth, wrote The Phantom of the Poles ( 1906 ). He developed the idea of ​​a hollow Earth, but without inner spheres or suns.

Marshall Gardner wrote Journey Into the Deep of the Earth in 1913 (an updated edition was published in 1920 ). In the hollow Earth he placed the inner sun. He even built a working model of the hollow Earth and patented it. Gardner did not mention Reed, but he still spoke about Simms.

In 1924, Vladimir Obruchev 's fantastic novel Plutonium came out, where a star (Pluto) was in the center of the hollow Earth, and the inner surface of the Earth was partially inhabited by prehistoric animals and primitive people. The inner space of the Earth had access to the surface through a hole in the Arctic . However, Vladimir Obruchev himself referred to the hypothesis of the hollow Earth as a long ago rejected science and used it in a work of art only as a plausible fiction, allowing to transfer the organisms of previous geological epochs into the modern world, to acquaint readers with them as if alive ^[4] .

At the very end of World War I, a German pilot named Bender ended up in a French prisoner of war camp, where he accidentally discovered a pile of old issues of The Flaming Sword , produced by American electrophysicist and alchemical literature researcher Cyrus Teed which, studying legends and myths, in 1864 came to the conclusion that since the Earth is a sphere, and beyond the horizon, the earth’s surface goes up, this means that people live in the underworld , and founded the occult doctrine of “ Koreshanism "Or" Corechism. Nevertheless, the fate of Bender was tragic. In April 1942, he took part in an expedition to the island of Rügen , supported by the top leadership of the Third Reich , led by the prominent infrared technician Heinz Fischer . Its purpose was to verify Bender’s allegations, but an attempt using a radar aimed at the sky at a 45-degree angle to obtain a photograph of the British fleet located in Scapa Flow ended in failure. Bender was imprisoned in a concentration camp , where he died ^[5] .

The book Hollow Earth, published in 1969 , allegedly written by Dr. Raymond Bernard, continues this idea. The book recounts the ideas of Reed and Gardner, while ignoring Simms. Bernard also proposes his own ideas: UFOs emerge from the ground, the Ring Nebula proves the existence of hollow worlds, etc. Martin Gardner in his article identified Bernard as Dr. Walter Zigmeister, but the full story with him was not known before Walter published the book. Kafton-Minkel "Underground Worlds: 100,000 Years of Dragons, Dwarfs, Dead, Disappeared Races and UFOs in the Earth's Interior" in 1989 . Bernard himself disappeared into the caves of South America in the 60s , which gave his fans confidence that he was able to reach the underworld.

Ray Palmer , editor of the magazine popular fiction " Amazing Stories ", in 1945 - 1949 . published a cycle of stories called “The Secret of Shavera” on this topic. The stories themselves were presented as facts in a fantastic frame. Shaver claimed that, even in prehistoric times, the super-race had built a whole system of underground structures, similar to a giant hive. Thousands of readers of the magazine wrote letters to the editors, confirming that they had also heard frightening voices from the ground.

It was also rumored at one time (in certain circles that were considered true) that Adolf Hitler and some of his followers fled to the underworld of the hollow Earth through a hole in the Antarctic after World War II .

Some authors also proposed the construction of megastructures that have some similarities with the hollow Earth - Dyson Sphere , Globus Cassus .

Concave Hollow Worlds

Cyrus Teed , an eccentric doctor from New York , proposed the idea of ​​a concave world in 1869 , calling his scheme " Cellular Cosmogony ." He founded a religious cult called " Koreshan Union " ( English Koreshan Unity ) and based on his views (he himself called them "Koreshanism", English Koreshanity ). In 1894 he already had 4,000 followers; now there is not one, although their main colony is now preserved as a historical reserve in Estero, Florida . They claimed that they had been able to experimentally prove the concavity of the Earth through observations of the coast of Florida using equipment whose name can be roughly translated as “rectifier” ( English rectilineator ).

Several German writers of the 20th century , including Peter Bender, Johannes Lang, Karl Neupert and Fritz Brown, published works in defense of the theories of the hollow Earth (they called it Hohlweltlehre ). It was even claimed here, although without indicating the sources, that Hitler so seriously believed in the theory of the concave Earth that he sent an expedition (which ended unsuccessfully) with the task of spying on the British navy by means of pointing the cameras at the sky. Bender, a German pilot, explained the appearance of the roundness of the Earth by optical illusion.

Disclaimers

The "hypothesis of the hollow Earth" is easily refuted by a large number of independently obtained scientific data:

• The "hypothesis of the hollow Earth" is not consistent with the results of observations of the passage of seismic waves through the thickness of the Earth. Longitudinal waves arising from large earthquakes travel in the direction of any of the imaginary chords, including the diameter, connecting the earthquake hypocenter and seismic stations . The constructed models of seismic wave propagation during large earthquakes completely coincide with the results of observation. If there was a cavity inside the Earth, this would have been impossible.
• The Earth’s average density — the ratio of the total mass to the volume bounded by the outer surface of the earth’s crust — is 5,520 kg / m³, and the density of the directly accessible rocks of the earth’s crust is usually much lower than the average, which means that there must be a sufficient amount of matter in the planet’s interior .
