Biography

The son of the last court marshal of the Lithuanian Michal Gelgud and Eleanor Tyszkiewicz. In 1812 he participated in Napoleon’s invasion of Russia . After 1815, Gelgud was appointed head of the brigade in the Kingdom of Poland .

He took part in the uprising of 1830 . He was instructed to enter with a special detachment in Lithuania and to join the detachments of Khlapovsky and Dembinsky operating there. Around the middle of May 1831, this was succeeded. After the clash near Raigrod against the insignificant Russian detachment of General Saken , successful for Gelgud, then he hesitated for a long time and only on June 7 (19) decided to attack Vilna , though not with all his forces. The Russians, meanwhile, managed to get reinforcements, and the rebel attack ended in complete failure. The further actions of Gelgud were limited to a skirmish with the detachment of General Dellingshausen on June 11 (23) and futile attempts to seize the city of Shavli (modern Siauliai). Gelgud's corps was divided into separate parts, and he himself was removed from command. With the detachment of Khlapovsky, Gelgud arrived at the Prussian border and crossed it on June 19 (July 1); but he was immediately shot dead by Lieutenant Skulsky, who suspected him of treason [2] .
