Garcia could become a virtuoso even despite his crippled right hand - in his youth, he accidentally lost two phalanges on the middle finger of his right hand when he chopped firewood.
Biography
Jerry Garcia was born in 1942 in San Francisco, and learned to play the guitar when he was 15 years old. At 16, Garcia graduated from high school, after which he served in the army for a short time. Demobilized, he settled in Palo Alto , where he met the future songwriter of The Grateful Dead, Robert Hunter. Then Garcia bought a banjo and started playing in local country ensembles.
At the end of 1964 , one of these ensembles, Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions , transformed into the rock band The Warlocks and then a little later into Grateful Dead , and Garcia himself switched to electric guitar . Garcia’s way of playing the electric guitar incorporated elements of bluegrass and Chuck Berry , country and modern jazz , which made her completely unique. In the early years of working with The Grateful Dead, Garcia played the Guild guitar, and then switched to Gibson, plus he sometimes used the Fender Stratocaster .
From 1964 to 1966 he was a member of the " Funny pranksters " commune. Most of the “ acid tests” of Frenzy Pranksters took place with The Grateful Dead [1] .
In 1969, he performed with the group at the Woodstock festival , but according to the Grateful Dead themselves, they did not perform very well and the video of their performance was removed from the official version of the Woodstock video.
Since the 1970s, the musician began to play custom-made guitars, for a long time he used the services of a master named Doug Irwin. On one of the custom-made guitars, which received the name "Tiger", the musician played for 11 years. In the 1990s , Garcia managed to play the guitars of another master, Stephen Cripe.
In 1981, he married his long-time acquaintance of the party "Funny Pranksters" - Carolyn Adams ( Eng. Carolyn Adams ), also known as "Goryanka" (Eng. Mountain Girl) [2] . This marriage lasted until 1994 , but Jerry and Carolyn maintained friendly relations until his death.
The Grateful Dead's career lasted a very long time and was interrupted only in 1995 , when Jerry Garcia died of a heart attack in one of the clinics during the rehabilitation period that the musician went through after treatment for drug addiction . According to the wishes of the deceased, the remains of Garcia were scattered over the Pacific Ocean [3] .
Shortly after his death, New York department stores Bloomingdales and Macy's rushed shoppers for ties and scarves designed by a guitarist [4] .
