Biography
Vizigard is the eldest daughter of the Lombard king Vaho from the Leninga dynasty and his second wife, Austriguza , daughter of the king of the Gepids, Gelemund . Her younger sister was Vuldetrad [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] .
In 532, before the war between the Franks and the Visigoths , Vizigard was engaged to Theodebert I, the son of Theodoric I , King of Australia . The marriage was supposed to strengthen the union of the Lombards and Franks, but the marriage took place only in 539 or 540, and then, only under pressure from the Frankish nobility, who did not want King Theodebert I to cohabit with Deotheria , the mother of his son Theodebald [3] [8] [9] [10] .
During the marriage, the Visigard influenced her husband: for example, she defended the close associate Theodebert I Asteriol, who came into conflict with Secundin, whom the king patronized [11] .
Shortly after the marriage, Vizigard died, and Theodebert married another woman, unknown by name. It is assumed that the grave discovered in Cologne Cathedral from the time of the Merovingians , in which a noble woman and child were buried, could be the burial place of Queen Vizigarda and her young son [12] .
