The “Submarine Commander” badge is the badge awarded to the commanders of the submarines of the USSR Navy upon assuming permanent command of their ship on the basis of orders from the commanders of the fleets and flotillas. The badge was awarded once in a festive atmosphere at the first entry into command. The badge was established by order of the NK Navy of the USSR No. 170 of June 12, 1942 .
The sign represents an image of a submarine - a submarine of the "Shch" type , in the center of which is a red star with a golden sickle and a hammer in the middle. The length of the mark is 70 mm, the highest height is 17 mm. The sign is brass, gilded.
By order of the Tax Code of the Navy of the USSR No. 383 dated August 16, 1943 , the sign was modified. The outlines of the image of the submarine are refined, in the center of which a red enamel star is placed, but already without a sickle and a hammer. Length - 68 mm, the highest height (with periscopes ) - 23 mm. The sign is metal, oxidized, the mounting method is changed from pin to pin and nut .
By order of the USSR Minister of Defense No. 233 dated August 15, 1987 , the “Submarine Commander” badge was transformed into one of the variants of the “Ship Commander” badge (option for submarine commanders). Another variant of the newly approved mark was an image of a surface warship - a cruiser of project 68 bis , with a red enamel star in the center (option for commanders of surface ships) [1] .
In 1996, a new “Ship Commander” badge was approved for the commanders of the Navy of the Russian Federation , in the same two versions - similar to the corresponding versions of the Soviet badge, with the only difference being that red enamel was removed from the images of the surface ship and submarine stars [2] .
