History
The Football Federation of Northern Rhodesia was founded in 1929 . After North Rhodesia gained independence in 1964, the Zambian Football Federation became known. Member of FIFA since 1964 .
The national team did not achieve major successes in the international arena. Nevertheless, the team was remembered for its performance at the 1988 Olympics . The team took 1st place in the preliminary stage group, where in addition to them were Italy , Guatemala and Iraq . Moreover, Italy was beaten 4-0 (3 goals in the account of Kalushi Bvalia ). However, in the quarterfinals, the Zambians lost 0-4 to the German national team (the hat-trick was made by Jürgen Klinsman ). However, with 6 goals scored, Kalusha Bvalia shared the 2nd place with Igor Dobrovolsky in the list of scorers of the Olympic football tournament.
All successes of the national team are connected with the African continent. The Zambian team was:
- Winner of the Union Cup of South African Football Associations in 1997 , 1998 and 2006
- Winner of the Union Cup of East African and Central African Football Associations in 1984 and 1991
- winner of the African Cup of Nations 2012
Plane crash April 27, 1993
In the history of the team there is a tragic date - April 27, 1993 . The Buffalo DHC-5D (AF-319) military plane, in which the Zambian national team flew to meet the Senegal national team in the qualifying tournament for the 1994 World Cup , crashed into the sea off the coast of Gabon . Killed all 30 people (including 18 football players) on board. The cause of the tragedy is engine failure.
The best football player in Zambia, Kalusha Bvalaya was involved in the match of the championship of the Netherlands and traveled to Senegal on his own. Anderlecht player Charles Musonda, who was injured at that time, also escaped death.

After the tragedy
The tragedy not only did not split, but even vice versa, rallied the national team: in 1994 it wins silver, and in 1996 - bronze medals of the African Cup of Nations. After that, however, there was a recession: the team until 2010 could not overcome the group stage of the championship of the "black continent". In 2010, through the efforts of his goalkeeper Kennedy Mwene, the team nevertheless left the group, losing in the 1/4 finals of Nigeria, but two years later won the Cup, having beaten the Ivorians on a penalty spot.
