Simeon , called Niger ( Greek Συμεών Ιεροσολύμων - Simeon of Jerusalem) - an apostle of seventy [1] , is mentioned in the Apostolic Acts ( Acts 13: 1 ), where he is called one of the prophets and teachers in Antioch .
In medieval traditions, the apostle Simeon was considered the son of the apostle Cleopas (that is, a cousin of Jesus Christ ). He believed in Christ in adulthood and became the second bishop of Jerusalem after the death of the apostle James . According to church tradition, Simeon, in extreme old age, received martyrdom through a crucifix under the emperor Trajan . Attempts were made to identify Bishop Simeon with Simon Zelot instead of Simeon Niger.
The memory of the Apostle Simeon is performed in the Orthodox Church on January 17 ( January 4, old style) on the day of the Council of the Apostles from seventy [1] , in the Catholic Church on April 27 .
