Cross-shaped in plan, the 22-storey building at the address 90/2 Leninsky Prospekt was built in 1979 [1] as part of the overall increase in the hotel fund of the capital on the eve of the Olympics-80 .
The total area of the hotel with 600 rooms, designed and built in accordance with international standards of the time, was 40,874 m².

In addition to Sport, for the Olympics, two more hotel-type buildings were built - house number 7 on Kravchenko street and house number 37 along Vernadsky Avenue , later transformed into MSU dormitories (the so-called DSK and DSE) and existing to date.

Demolition

The decision to liquidate “Sport” - “in connection with the emergency state” - was made by the Moscow mayor’s office in May 2004 [2] , and already on September 25 the building was demolished [3] by a directional explosion. The demolition was carried out by order of the organization “Amiril B.V.”, although the legality of managing it with this object was challenged by the former owners.

In September 2005, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation declared the demolition of the hotel illegal [4] , since the real owner of the building was the International Agency "Science". Amiral B.V. claims were filed to the court from residents of neighboring houses demanding compensation for moral damage, since they received no warnings about the impending explosion and took it for an act of terrorism .

At the place of "Sport", it was initially planned to build a hotel and entertainment complex, later on an office center. In the summer of 2017, the analysis of hotel remains for the construction of a multifunctional complex began [5] .
