He studied at the University of Freiburg and Marburg , after defending his dissertation he trained in 1950 - 1951 at the University of Virginia , USA . In 1951 - 1957 - assistant to Max Horkheimer at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. In 1957 - 1960 - in Geneva and New York . In 1960 - 1963 - at the University of Freiburg , in 1963 - 1967 - at the University of Frankfurt , after 1967 - at the University of Tübingen .

Significance and Legacy
He played a crucial role in the return of theorists' interest in Max Weber and Georg Simmel , in their project of understanding sociology as a science of modernity (Weber and Zimmelevian “renaissance”). He defended and developed the interpretative capabilities of the concept of “culture” in a polemic with the trends of German sociology ( Ralph Darendorf , not without the influence of American structural functionalism ) to reduce the semantic world of a person to the characteristics of his place and role in the social system. Tenbrook's works have been translated into a number of languages, including Korean and Japanese.
