Brother of Johan Afzelius and Per Afzelius .

In 1777 he taught Oriental languages at Uppsala University .

In 1792 he went for scientific purposes on the west coast of Africa , in particular, to the English colony of Sierra Leone , where as a result of the attack and robbery carried out by the French, he lost all his collections.

In 1797-1798 he was secretary of the Swedish embassy in London .

After returning, in 1799 he became an academic professor of botany at Uppsala University and in 1812 received the title of professor materia medica .

In 1802 he was elected president of the Linnaeus Institute (" Zoophytolytic Society ").

As a botanical writer, Afzelius is known for many of his works, as well as the autobiography of Linnaeus published in 1823.

Plant genera are named after him:

  • Afzelia Sm.
  • Afzeliella gilg

and many species .

The ethnographic and botanical collections of Afzelius were purchased by Uppsala University.
