Biography
King Widor was born on February 8, 1894 in Galveston ( Texas ). After leaving school he ran away from home. At first he worked as a movie ticketer, then he tried and mastered all cinematic professions - from film developers, projectionists, cameramen and actors to film makers. A year later he returned home, from where his parents sent him to study at the Military Academy. In 1915 he came to Hollywood , where he first worked in newsreels. In 1918, he directed his first feature film, The Turn of the Road . In 1926, Vidor’s film “ Big Parade ” appeared on the screen, which was put at the expense of an independent company.
In 1928, the film " The Crowd " was released. Between the Big Parade and the Crowd, the director directed two ordinary entertaining films. King Widor was one of the first American filmmakers to join the production of sound films . His first sound production is Hallelujah ; it, for the first time in Hollywood, starred real African-Americans .
In 1962, Widor led the jury at the 12th Berlin International Film Festival . In 1969 he was a member of the jury at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival .
From 1915 to 1926, the director was married to actress Florence Vidor , and from 1926 to 1931 to actress Elinor Boardman , who bore him two daughters. King Widor died of a heart attack at his ranch in Paso Robles, California , at the age of 88.
