History
The heyday of Iraqi football came in the 1970s and 1980s . The national team of Iraq qualified for the final tournament of the 1986 World Cup , and also participated in the Olympic Games three times: in Moscow , Los Angeles and Seoul . Also, Iraqi footballers won in 1982 in the Asian Games football tournament , won the Arab Nations Cup four times, and in 1985, the second Iraqi national team won the Pan-Arab Games . In the Asian Cup, Iraq finished fourth in 1976 and did not participate in this tournament until 1996 .
During the reign of Saddam Hussein , the head of the Iraqi Olympic Committee and, concurrently, the curator of the national football team, was the son of Saddam, Uday Hussein . Under Udea, the team was often motivated by threats to break the legs of players, skipping training could be punished with imprisonment, and in case of defeat, players could be whipped with an electric cable or even redeemed in sewage [2] . After the Persian Gulf War, Iraq was excluded from participation in the Asian Games and most of the Arab football competitions, but then continued to participate in the qualifying tournament for the 1994 World Cup. By 1996, the Iraqi national team was ranked 139 in the FIFA ranking , the lowest in its history. Nevertheless, the Iraqi team sometimes achieved serious results in individual matches: on October 28, 1993, the Iraqi team played a draw in Doha with the Japanese team with a score of 2: 2, scoring a goal during the second-half extra time and leaving the Japanese without a ticket to the world championship .
Despite the war in Iraq , the football team continued to participate in international tournaments, with good results. In 2004, the Iraqi national team reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup in football (with the same result the team competed in the Asian Cups in 1996 and 2000 ) and then qualified to participate in the 2004 Summer Olympics . In Athens, Iraqi footballers defeated the Olympic teams of Portugal , Costa Rica and Australia , and eventually became the fourth, losing in the match for the Italian national team - 0: 1; In addition, the Iraqi national team was awarded the FIFA prize for fair play . In late 2004, the team was recognized by the Asian Football Confederation as the “team of the year”. In 2005, the Iraqi national team won gold medals at the West Asian Games . In 2006, the Olympic team of Iraq won silver medals at the Asian Games . In 2007, the Iraqi national team won the Asian Cup in football and was again recognized as the team of the year AFC , the best Arab team of the year according to the authoritative publication Al-Ahram , and also the best team of the year according to World Soccer Magazine . [3] The team was also nominated for the Prince of Asturias Humanitarian Award. [4] As a result of winning the Asian Cup, the Iraqi national team took part in the 2009 Confederations Cup , held in South Africa , where the team could not overcome the group stage.
