On the territory of Russia is not observed, and on the territory of the former USSR a small part of the constellation is visible only in the southernmost regions. The visibility of the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud south of latitude + 20 ° 15 ', and the full visibility of the constellation south of latitude + 20 °. And south of latitude −20 ° 15 ', the center of the Greater Magellanic Cloud never goes beyond the horizon. The cities where it is non-stop include Rio de Janeiro , Sao Paulo , Santiago , Montevideo , Buenos Aires , Johannesburg , Sydney , Melbourne .
In the constellation is the south pole of the ecliptic . The star AB Gold Fish , which gave the name to the moving group of stars , and S Gold Fish , the prototype of a whole class of very bright pulsating hypergiants, are also located here. One of the brightest stars in the constellation - the Gamma of Golden Fish - also gave its name to a separate class of variable stars .
In 1987, supernova SN 1987A flashed in the constellation Golden Fish. And in the southern part of the constellation is the Large Magellanic Cloud - an irregular galaxy, the brightest in the night sky - its brightness is +0.8 m .
History
The constellation Golden Fish was proposed by Peter Plantsius in 1598 . For some time it was called that, but in 1627 in the Rudolph tables Johannes Kepler proposed the Swordfish variant ( lat. Xiphias ). Under this name, it appears in some ancient atlases of the starry sky , and they depicted there not only a sword-fish , but also a saw-fish . In particular, the sword-fish is depicted in " Uranography " by Jan Hevelius . Two names are used in the Atlas Coelestis by John Gabriel Doppelmayr - Golden Fish ( Dorado ) and Sword Fish ( Xiphias ). The Atlas of Heaven by John Flemstead , as well as the atlas of Thomas Corbinianus Mercurii philosophici firmamentum firmianum, depicts a sawfish signed by Dorado (Golden Fish).
Now accepted the original (given by Plantsius) name of the constellation - lat. Dorado (Golden Fish). But in German the name "Sword-Fish" ( German Schwertfisch ) is preserved .
A star VFTS 102 was discovered in the Tarantula Nebula , at which the equatorial rotation speed exceeds 500 km / s, which is a hundred times faster than that of the Sun [1] .
