Professor at the Paris Normal and Polytechnic Schools, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, Professor at Collège de France and Member of the Institute. He was known for his course of differential and integral calculus: “Traité du calcul différentiel et intégral”, according to which he studied for several generations. In addition, at one time there were known and distributed it: "Cours de mathématiques élémentaires"; “Traité des différences et des series”; “Essai sur renseignement des mathématiques”; “Traité du calcul des probabilités”; Manuel d'arpentage "Introduction à la connaissance de la sphère, etc." The Foundations of Arithmetic "has been translated into Russian (St. Petersburg, 1883 ).
In the Russian Empire, Sylvester Lacroix's textbooks were widely used when giving lectures at universities , and they, along with the manuals of Louis-Benjamin Francoeur, served as the main sources and samples for compilers of Russian textbooks.
Memory
In 1935, the International Astronomical Union named Lacroix as a crater on the visible side of the moon .
