Etymology
Tiburón in translation from Spanish means “ shark ”.
Geography
The island is the largest island of Mexico and the Gulf of California. From the east, it is separated from the mainland by a narrow strait ( Canal del Infiernillo ), in the north-west direction from Tiburon there is another large island of the Bay of Angel de la Guarda .
History
Since ancient times, the island was inhabited by the Seri Indian tribe [1] . In 1963, declared a natural reserve. By a decree of 1975, the President of Mexico, L. Euchercheria Alvarez , Tiburon Island is recognized as the property of the Seri tribe [2] .
Population
Currently, the island is uninhabited (except for military facilities on the east side).
