Biography
Ivan Puni was born in a family cottage in the village of Kuokkala on the Karelian Isthmus (at that time the territory of the Grand Duchy of Finland as part of the Russian Empire , now the village of Repino in the Kurortny district of St. Petersburg ). His paternal grandfather Caesar Pugni is a native of Italy , who settled in Russia in 1851, the famous ballet composer; paternal grandmother is an Englishwoman. [4] Artist's father, Albert (after the adoption of Orthodoxy - Andrei) Pugni - cellist of the Mariinsky Theater .
He received his primary art education at home, took lessons from I. E. Repin , under whose influence he chose the path of the artist. His father dreamed of a military career for his son, so he was forced to study in 1900-1908 in the Nikolaev Cadet Corps .
In 1910-1911 he made his first trip to Paris, where he studied at the academy of R. Julian , Colarossi and others. [4] In Paris, Pugni discovered the work of Cezanne , Nabid , Cubists and Fauvists .
In 1912, having returned through Italy to Petersburg, he met N.I. Kulbin , D.D. Burliuk , V.V. Mayakovsky , V.V. Khlebnikov , K.S. Malevich , participated in the exhibition "Union of Youth".
In 1913 he married Ksenia Boguslavskaya [4] , who was also an artist, as well as a designer and poet.
In 1914, together with his young wife, he again went to Paris, where for the first time he exhibited his works in the Salon of Independents. [3] [4] Returning to Petrograd just before the outbreak of World War I , Pugni became the organizer and main sponsor of the scandalous futuristic exhibitions of 1915 "Tram B" and " 0.10 ".
His apartment in parental home 1 on Gatchina Street in St. Petersburg from 1913 to 1915 [5] was a meeting place for artists and poets, avant-garde artists and futurists .

In 1921, at the Sturm-Galerie in Berlin, its owner Herwart Walden held a solo exhibition of Pugni. [3] In 1923, a programmatic text by Pugni, "Modern Painting" [6] , was published in Berlin, in which he reduced his scores to non-objective art.
After the final relocation to France in 1924, Pugni's style gradually approached lyrical primitivism - a similar spirit, in which Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard also worked. [2]
In 1946, Ivan Puni adopted French citizenship. He died in Paris on December 28, 1956 .
Between 1921 and 1956, Pugni held 12 solo exhibitions in Berlin, Paris, New York, and London and participated in more than one hundred group exhibitions. [2]
