Start of business

The company was founded in 1946 under the name Tamiya Shoji & Co. (Tamiya Company) Yoshio Tamiyu in Shizuoka . It was a sawmill and a lumber company. Due to the high availability of wood, in 1947 a division of the company was established, engaged in the production of wooden models of ships and aircraft, which later became the basis of the company. In 1953, Tamiya decided to stop working with lumber and completely focused on making models. In the mid-1950s, plastic models of foreign production began to appear in Japan, the sales of wooden models decreased, so Tamiya in 1959 decided to produce plastic models. Their first model was the battleship Yamato.
