He started as a violinist in the Arnhem Orchestra . After World War II, the violinist and conductor in the orchestra of one of the Amsterdam theaters. In 1953 he headed the Kunstmaand Orchestra ( Dutch. Kunstmaand Orkest ), created to work at the festival of the same name, and brought it to a solid professional level, so that in 1969 the orchestra was transformed into the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra . Kershes did a lot to popularize the music of Dmitry Shostakovich in the Netherlands in 1972 and 1977 . toured with the orchestra in the USSR and led the team until its abolition in connection with the reorganization in 1985. Kershes was also vice-director of the Maastricht Conservatory.
Together with his wife, violinist Margret van de Grunekan, Kershes established the Kershes and van de Grunekan Foundation in 1994 , subsidizing a number of significant events in Dutch music life and giving three national music awards since 2002 : a young quartet, a young violinist and a young conductor . Since 2005 , the Kershes Music Festival has also been held.
