
George Lazar ( rum. Gheorghe Lazăr ; June 5, 1779 , Avrig - September 17, 1821 , Avrig ) - Romanian public figure and teacher , a native of Transylvania .
Gathering several patriots around him in Bucharest , Lazarus decided to fight against the Greek influence of the fanariots and founded a Romanian school with a broad program in a national spirit; compiled textbooks, took care of the opening of such schools in other cities, founded a culturally progressive society on a national basis.
In 1818, G. Lazar opened the first school in Bucharest with teaching in the Romanian language - the Saint Savva School, which still exists today, called the National Saint Savva College. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Romania.
