Design Features Summary
Many components and assemblies of the VAZ-2123 were borrowed from the previous generation of the Niva VAZ-2121 3/21214. The VAZ-2123 engine was a further development of the VAZ-21214 injection engine with adaptation to the new engine compartment. Modifications were also made with carburetor engines and a 2 liter injection engine with an original transmission. As a result of a denser layout of the engine compartment, a spare wheel was hung on the rear door, which, by the way, was more consistent with the fashion in the SUV segment. In the steering, a domestic electric power amplifier was used. The front and rear driveshafts are unified (similar to the short-base modification Lada 4x4), the intermediate shaft is elongated. Mounting of the transfer case was changed (the third support appeared), the locking lever of the interaxle differential is combined with the shift lever of the demultiplier (the so-called single-lever “transfer” scheme). The front axle gearbox is separate from the engine. The attachment points of the rear shock absorbers are offset closer to the wheels and mounted vertically. The lower links of the rear axle now form a parallelogram, which reduces the steering of the rear axle. In front, unlike the Chevrolet Niva, there are two towing eyes. Some models were equipped with a steering wheel with an integrated airbag. The family of bodies, in addition to the base five-door station wagon, also included a VAZ-2323 pickup truck and a VAZ-2723 van, which did not go into series.
A Brief History of the Model
Designing a new compact all-terrain vehicle with a 5-door load-bearing body to replace the popular Niva was started at AvtoVAZ in the mid-80s, but in the conditions of the country's economy switching to market rails, the enterprise was not able to bring the new product to mass production. In the absence of a strategic partner, AvtoVAZ decided to launch a small-scale production of VAZ-2123 at OPP facilities. The car was not launched into mass production, as the license for it was acquired by General Motors , as well as the rights to the Niva brand . Since September 2002, instead of the VAZ-2123, the Chevrolet Niva all-terrain vehicle, with the Chevrolet nameplate on the radiator grille, has been manufactured at the new capacities of the GM-AVTOVAZ joint venture. The Chevrolet Niva was twice recognized as the "SUV of the Year" in Russia.
