A proverb is a cryptography system, a system of simplified, more abbreviated and faster writing . Typical constructions of signs of a halfword:
- instead of the whole letter, its characteristic part is written so that different letters do not coincide with their signs;
- signs are flipped in the opposite direction;
- in the form of options, there are signs obtained by deformation of the original letters.

- The Vatican has a manuscript written in a halfword - cod. Vatic. Slav. N VIII, the so-called Vatican Psalter. The Trinity abbot Artemy, known for the freethinking cleric of the XVI century, had the whole Gospel , Apostle and Psalter , written in a half-word.
