Born in Santo Domingo, spent his childhood and youth in New York , USA . He graduated from the University of Santo Domingo, worked as a teacher and journalist, then went into politics. He was elected president in 1996 and, after a four-year hiatus, was re-elected for a second term in 2004 . After the elections of May 16, 2008, he was re-elected for a third term.
