Prague Spring (festival)

The Prague Spring International Music Festival ( Czech: Mezinárodní hudební festival Pražké jaro ) is an academic music festival held annually in Prague .

Rudolfinum Concert Hall

It was first held in 1946 in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra as a cultural event of national importance, under the patronage of the President of Czechoslovakia Edward Benes . Since 1947 , as part of the festival, a competition of young musicians in a variety of specialties has been held (a competition for each specialty may have its own name in honor of one or another outstanding Czech musician; for example, the very first prize of 1947, which did not reach anyone, was named after Jan Kubelika ). Since 1952 , the festival’s tradition was the opening on May 12 , on the anniversary of the death of Bedřich Smetana , with the performance of his cycle of symphonic poems “ My Homeland ”. The traditional venue for festival concerts is Rudolfinum , a significant part of the concerts are also held in the Smetana Hall of the Prague Public House .

In the second edition of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia there was an article “Prague Spring” about this music festival, but in the third edition of the encyclopedia, which was published after the Soviet troops entered Czechoslovakia in 1968, this article did not fall for censorship reasons [1] .
