Having settled early in Rome, in his youth he took part in the First Punic War , which he later sang in the great epic poem “ Bellum Punicum ” , which composed the first original epic work in Roman literature. Following the example of Livia, Andronicus Nevi wrote for the stage. The ancients were known for its 5 or 6 tragedies and up to 37 comedies with plots, partly borrowed from Greek writers, partly original. However, in the loan itself, Nevy showed the strength of his own creativity, independently processing and developing the themes he had taken. Moreover, he often composed of two or even several Greek plays one Roman ( contamination ). He showed the greatest talent in comedies - Volcations Sedigit in his canon of Roman comedians (Gell. N. A. XV, 24) puts him in third place after Plavt and Cecilius. But the comedies that made up Nevy's fame were also the cause of his misfortunes: scourging the vices of powerful people with pure Aristophanian freedom, Nevi incited hatred against himself of such influential people as Metella and Scipio , and on the basis of law XII of defamation tables was concluded jail. Subsequently, he was released, but expelled from the fatherland and died in Utica around 200 BC. e. Until later times, he remained the favorite writer of many educated people, which was greatly facilitated by the purity and expressiveness of his language. His poem on the Punic War had a strong influence not only on Ennius , but also on Virgil . Cicero and Marcus Aurelius were ardent admirers of the works of Nevi.
