In 2008, the LDU for the first time in the history of Ecuadorian football won the Libertadores Cup . In addition, in December 2008, the League with a minimum score with an equal game lost to the English Manchester United in the final of the club world championship . In 2009, LDU won its second international trophy - the South American counterpart to the Rekopu Super Cup. In December, the team won the second most important trophy in South America - the South American Cup , where in the final it was again stronger than the Brazilian Fluminense , which it defeated in the final of the Libertadores Cup. Thus, in just two years, the team collected all the possible trophies of South American continental football.
The main rivals of the LDU are teams from Quito - El Nacional , Deportivo Quito and Aukas . Of the rivals in Guayaquil, the most significant confrontation is with Barcelona , a club that twice lost in the Libertadores Cup final in the 1990s .
In addition to football, the club cultivates the following sports: basketball , athletics , boxing , baseball , swimming , table tennis , chess .

History
The club was founded on January 11, 1930 by a group of students from the Central University of Ecuador . The budget at the base was only about 500 pesos. The athletes were students from the University who bought themselves uniforms and sports equipment. The club initially cultivated the above sports, but still, football gradually took on leading roles, although in those days the general level of this sport was one of the lowest in South America.
In 1932, LDU won its first title by winning the Pichincha Province Championship. Until 1957, there was no single league in Ecuador, so the country's strongest clubs were revealed in such regional competitions. Of course, the most powerful tournaments were the Pichinchi and Guayas championships, the center of which was the port of Guayaquil. LDU won the province championship twice more - in 1952 and 1953 . Already with the introduction of professionalism, LDU won a number of regional Infrandino championships with the participation of clubs from Quito and Ambato (1954, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1966, 1967), but with the foundation of the Ecuador championship, these trophies almost lost their significance.
In the 1960s , legionnaires from Brazil , Chile , Paraguay began to appear in the club. In 1967, regional tournaments were abolished and after entering the top division, the team immediately won the 1969 championship. A year later, LDU made its debut in the Libertadores Cup . The best goalkeeper of the tournament was Uruguayan Francisco Bertocci , the first legionnaire star in the history of LDU. After leaving the League in 1971 - 1973 . Bertochchi played 10 times for the Uruguay national team.
In 1972, the League finished seventh in the championship of 8 teams. Since LDU was the worst among Pichinchi clubs, the team had to play butt games against the best Pichinchi club from 2 divisions. The league lost to Universidad Catholic and flew to Serie B. The team spent the entire season of 1973 in the second tier. However, the confusing competition system made it possible for LDU to return to the elite after winning the first stage of Series B of the 1974 season . And, paradoxically, starting the season with the rank of Serie B club, LDU finished the season with the rank of champion of Ecuador, defeating El Nacional in the decisive stages. In 1975, the League won its third league title. Twice - in 1975 and 1976 , the LDU reached the semi-finals of the Libertadores Cup. The main star in 1972-1976 was another Uruguayan player - striker Oscar Subia , who had experience in playing for Penarol and the Uruguay national team before moving to Ecuador (15 games, 4 goals). The team was led by Colombian Leonel Montoya.
In the late 1970s, a crisis began in the team. The league again flew to Serie B in 1978 , but spent only half a season there (the championship organization system again helped). There was a small spike in 1981 - second place in the championship, League top player scorer Paulo Cesar of the League, a ticket to the Libertadores Cup for the next season , but in general the 1980s passed without great success.
Since 1990, Liga has won six of its nine league titles in Ecuador, unconditionally breaking into the country's most titled clubs. Many players from this team simultaneously entered and are now playing in the Ecuador national team , which has unsuccessfully performed at the 2002 and 2006 World Championships . LDU became a regular participant of the Libertadores Cup. Departure for Serie B in 2000 can only be explained by a misunderstanding, especially since the team immediately won a place in the South American Cup 2003 after returning to the elite, and since 2004 the LDU has not missed a single Libertadores Cup.
In 2004, the team reached the semi-finals of the South American Cup - it was the best result in the international arena since the semi-finals of the Libertadores Cup in 1975 and 1976.

On July 2, 2008, the LDU lost in the second final match of the Libertadores Fluminense Cup with a score of 3: 1. But since the home LDU won with the same goal difference (4: 2), extra time was assigned, and then a penalty shootout. The Ecuadorian club was stronger in it - 3: 1 and became the owner of the Libertadores Cup. One of the heroes of the final was the goalkeeper of the LDU Jose Francisco Sevallos , who repelled 3 penalty shoot-outs (including the author of the hat-trick at his goal in regular time - Thiago Neves ).

Speech after the triumph
In December 2008, LDU took part in the World Club Championship in Japan. Having confidently and quite expectedly defeated the Mexican Pachuca in the semi-finals, the club reached the final where they met with the winner of the UEFA Champions League Manchester United . The game was played with double-edged moments, although in some indicators the LDU even surpassed the eminent opponent. In the match, Ecuadorians even got a numerical advantage when Nemanja Vidic was eliminated for a rough foul against Bieler . However, the English club turned out to be more fortunate, and with the help of one successful action, Wayne Rooney managed to score the winning goal.
In 2009, LDU confidently defeated the winner of the 2008 South American Cup of the Brazilian International (1-0 away, 3-0 at home) in both Rekopy matches and won the second international trophy.
At the end of 2009, LDU won the South American Cup. In the final, Ecuadorians again opposed the Fluminense. After a home win with a score of 5-1, LDA went back to Marakana with a solid backlog. And even the victory of the Brazilians with a score of 3: 0 did not help them bring the matter even to extra time. For two years, LDU won all club trophies in South America.

In 2011, LDU reached the final of the South American Cup for the second time, where Ecuadorians failed to provide decent resistance to Universidad de Chile , who won his first international trophy.
