In the Middle Ages, a network of fortresses was erected in the Principality of Moldova , which made it possible to defend against the invasion of enemies. Some fortresses were erected even before the formation of the Moldavian independent state, others - by Moldavian sovereigns .
The most famous fortresses are the Belgorod-Dniester Fortress (Chetat Albe), Sorokskaya and Khotinskaya on the Dniester , Kiliya on the Danube , Tsetsinskaya , Roman , Suceava Throne Fortress and Nyametskaya - inside the country. These fortresses were built of stone and brick, their ruins have survived to the present day, other fortresses were wooden and not preserved. The size of the fortress is small. Wall thickness - up to 5 m. Belgorod and Suceava fortresses were surrounded by moats filled with water.
On the territory of Moldova there is also the Bendery fortress , built by the Turks and part of the Dniester line - a series of fortresses erected by the Russian government at the end of the 18th century to protect the new Russian settlements that arose there.
