Curriculum vitae
He studied at the University of Münster , then one year at the famous High Technical School of Zurich , under the direction of H. Hopf , defended his thesis on Riemann surfaces . In 1952 - 1954 he worked at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study ( Institute for Advanced Study ) ( USA ). Later he worked at the University of Bonn and was director of the Mathematical Institute as part of the Max Planck Society .
The main work in the field of algebraic geometry , where he summarized the classical Riemann-Roch theorem and especially in the field of algebraic topology , where he made an important contribution to the development of the so-called K-theory created by M. Atyoy . (An interesting fact is that not only Hirzebruch and Atis, but also R. Bott , who also made an important contribution to K-theory, were not only topologists, but also algebraic geometers). Also important are the works of Hirzebruch on characteristic classes (together with A. Borel ) and on Hilbert modular surfaces (together with his student D. Zagir ).
Foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1988; since 1991 - Russian Academy of Sciences ) [2] .
